I have a confession to make – once and for all – newborns are my favorite!
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE photographing families and children. But newborns …
With families and children over the infant stage, you never know exactly what you’re going to get. You could have the best behaved bunch, or you could have a session where you pull out every trick in the book to get those loving pictures mom craves. But with newborns there are some things you can count on. Baby is going to suddenly need to eat every 30 minutes. He’ll decide that the day of his session is the day he’s going on a sleep strike – at least for a few hours. And he’s going to get some kind of bodily fluid. But those are the types of things newborn photographers are prepared for.
Take Boone for example. We had his session when he was 11 days old. He’d already hung out in the womb for over a week longer than expected, so I wasn’t terribly surprised to find him bright eyed and bushy tailed upon my arrival. What did surprise me was his ability, at 11 days old, to make and hold eye contact with me. The picture above wasn’t even really planned. I was still testing my lighting. But, when Boone heard my shutter go off, he looked right into my lens. And I snapped the picture. And this unplanned picture is my favorite from his session.
Before any portrait session, but especially before a newborn session, I ask the parents (usually mom) if they have any specific requests as far as colors go. Boone’s mom only really had 2. She told me she LOVED elephants, had ordered an elephant hat, and could I be sure to get a picture with little man wearing it? Done! Then I found out that she and her husband had decided to keep Boone’s name a secret until he was born. To their friends and family, they just referred to him as their “man cub.” How sweet is that? So, of course, I had to bring my teddy bear hat!

As you can see, I did manage to get the bright-eyed little man good and asleep for a bit. And he LOVED my fur blanket. He kept curling his fingers into it.
I always love to get a few lifestyle newborn pictures as well when mom and dad are willing. Boone loved to smile when mommy talked to him!
And one last thing I’ve started including with the images for mom and dad after the session what I like to call a “details collage.” Throughout the session, I make sure to capture some of those special, new baby details – eye lashes, fingers & toes, nose, pouty lips, etc – and make those into a black and white collage.

You don’t have to wait until you’ve brought your baby home from the hospital to book your Newborn Portrait Session. All it takes is a 50% retainer fee to get your due date penciled in on my calendar.
Don’t miss out on these once in a lifetime portraits. Trust me, babies don’t keep!
